Understand how Python is used in data science

Every day more than 36,000 weather forecasts for 800 different regions and cities are published in the USA. You’ve probably noticed that the forecast was wrong when it started to rain in the middle of your picnic on a supposedly sunny day, but have you ever wondered exactly how those predictions were?

The people at Forecastwatch.com did it. Every day they collect the 36,000 forecasts, store them in a database and compare them to the actual conditions that day. The country’s forecasters then use the results to improve their forecasting models for the next cycle.
All of this collection, analysis, and reporting requires a lot of analytical power, but ForecastWatch uses a single programming language: Python.

The company is not alone. According to a 2013 study by industry analyst O’Reilly, 40% of the researchers who responded to the survey use Python in their daily work. They join the many other programmers in all areas who have made Python one of the ten most popular programming languages in the world every year since 2003.

Companies like Google, NASA and CERN use Python for almost every programming target under the sun.
